    Transmission
    Extremely contagious. Spreads by direct contact, aerosol over long distances, and contaminated feed, vehicles, equipment, people, and animal products.

    • High fever, dullness
    • Blisters (vesicles) on tongue, gums, lips, muzzle and between the hooves
    • Excessive drooling and smacking of lips

    Treatment
    No specific antiviral cure. In endemic areas, supportive care: soft feed, mouth/foot antiseptics, and antibiotics to control secondary infection. In FMD-free countries, policy is usually stamping-out (culling) rather than treatment.
    Prevention & control
    Vaccination (serotype-matched, inactivated), strict biosecurity, movement control, quarantine of new animals, disinfection.
    Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD)
    Bovine viral diarrhea virus (Pestivirus)
    Viral
    Causative agent: RNA virus, genus Pestivirus, family Flaviviridae. Enveloped, single-stranded RNA. Two biotypes (cytopathic / non-cytopathic); creates persistently infected (PI) carrier animals when a fetus is infected in early pregnancy.
    Transmission
    Direct contact with body fluids of infected/PI animals, and from dam to fetus across the placenta. PI animals shed virus for life.
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Fever, poor appetite, nasal discharge
    • Diarrhea, sometimes with blood
    • Mouth ulcers
    • Immune suppression → more respiratory disease
    • Reproductive loss: abortion, stillbirth, birth defects, PI calves

    Treatment

    Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)

    Transmission
    Respiratory and genital secretions, direct contact, aerosols, and semen. Latently infected carriers reactivate and shed during stress.

    Treatment
    No cure for the virus. Supportive care and antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial pneumonia. Rest and reduce stress.

    Vaccination (marker/gE-deleted vaccines allow test-and-remove programs), biosecurity, closed herds.
    Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD)

    Transmission

    Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF)

    Anthrax

    Transmission

    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Often sudden death with no prior signs
    • High fever, staggering, difficulty breathing before death
    • Dark, tarry blood from natural openings (nose, mouth, anus)

    • Swellings on the body in some cases
    Treatment
    Early cases respond to high-dose antibiotics (penicillin, oxytetracycline, fluoroquinolones) under veterinary supervision. Do NOT open the carcass — this spreads spores. Report immediately.
    Prevention & control
    Annual vaccination (Sterne spore vaccine) in endemic areas, proper carcass disposal (deep burial or incineration), pasture management.
    Blackleg
    Clostridium chauvoei

    Causative agent: Clostridium chauvoei — Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming rod. Spores persist in soil; germinate in muscle and release gas-forming toxins.
    Transmission
    Ingestion of spores from soil; spores lodge in muscle and activate after bruising/injury. Mainly affects young, fast-growing cattle (6 months–2 years).
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Sudden lameness
    • Hot, painful muscle swelling that becomes cold and crackly (gas under skin)
    • High fever, depression, off feed
    • Rapid progression
    • Death within 12–48 hours in most cases
    Treatment
    High-dose penicillin very early may help, but most animals die quickly. Surgical drainage of lesions is sometimes attempted. Prevention is far more effective.
    Prevention & control
    Vaccination with clostridial (blackleg / 7-way or 8-way) vaccine, boosted appropriately in young stock. Proper carcass disposal.
    Hemorrhagic Septicemia
    Pasteurella multocida (serotypes B:2, E:2)

    Causative agent: Pasteurella multocida — Gram-negative coccobacillus. Certain serotypes cause acute, rapidly fatal septicemia, especially in tropical/humid climates.
    Transmission

    Brucellosis (Bang's Disease)

    Treatment

    Vaccination (RB51 or Strain 19), test-and-slaughter programs, hygienic handling of birth material, and pasteurization of milk.
    Bovine Tuberculosis

    Mastitis
    Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., E. coli and others
    Bacterial
    Causative agent: Inflammation of the udder caused by many bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae/uberis/dysgalactiae (Gram-positive), and coliforms such as Escherichia coli (Gram-negative). Contagious vs environmental sources.
    Transmission
    Entry of bacteria through the teat canal — from contaminated bedding, milking equipment, hands, or teat lesions.
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Swollen, hot, painful udder or quarter
    • Abnormal milk: clots, flakes, watery, blood-tinged, or discolored
    • Reduced milk yield
    • Fever and off feed in severe (acute) cases
    • Subclinical form: no visible signs but raised somatic cell count
    Treatment
    Intramammary and/or systemic antibiotics chosen from milk culture/sensitivity, anti-inflammatories, frequent stripping of the affected quarter, and fluids for severe coliform cases. Observe milk/meat withdrawal times.
    Prevention & control
    Good milking hygiene, teat dipping, dry-cow therapy, clean dry bedding, regular equipment maintenance, and culling chronic carriers.
    Bovine Respiratory Disease (Shipping Fever)
    Mannheimia haemolytica (with Pasteurella, Histophilus, and viruses)
    Bacterial
    Causative agent: Complex disease; the key bacterium is Mannheimia haemolytica (Gram-negative). Often follows viral infection (IBR, BVD, BRSV) and stress; also involves Pasteurella multocida and Histophilus somni.
    Transmission
    Aerosol and contact, triggered by transport, weaning, mixing, and weather stress that lower immunity.
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Fever, dullness, off feed
    • Cough, rapid or labored breathing
    • Nasal and eye discharge
    • Drooping ears, extended head/neck

    Treatment
    Prompt antibiotics (e.g. florfenicol, macrolides, oxytetracycline, fluoroquinolones per vet), anti-inflammatories, and supportive care. Early treatment is key.

    Vaccination (respiratory viral + bacterial), low-stress weaning/transport, good ventilation, gradual mixing, and metaphylaxis in high-risk groups.
    Johne's Disease (Paratuberculosis)
    Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP)

    Causative agent: Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis — acid-fast, very slow-growing bacterium that thickens the intestinal wall. Long incubation (years).
    Transmission
    Fecal–oral: calves infected young by ingesting manure-contaminated milk, water, or feed. Also via colostrum and in utero.
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Chronic, progressive watery diarrhea (not bloody)
    • Steady weight loss despite normal appetite
    • Drop in milk yield
    • 'Bottle jaw' (fluid swelling under the jaw) in late stages
    • Signs usually appear only in adults 2+ years
    Treatment
    No practical cure; treatment does not clear infection. Affected animals are usually culled to protect the herd.
    Prevention & control
    Test-and-cull, raise calves away from adult manure, feed pasteurized/clean colostrum and milk, and improve hygiene. Vaccines exist in some regions but interfere with TB testing.
    Leptospirosis
    Leptospira interrogans (serovars)

    Causative agent: Leptospira species — thin, coiled, motile spirochetes (Gram-negative-like). Multiple serovars (e.g. Hardjo, Pomona). Colonize kidneys and reproductive tract.
    Transmission
    Contact with urine of infected animals/wildlife, and contaminated water, mud, or feed; enters through mucous membranes and broken skin.
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Fever, reduced appetite
    • Abortion, stillbirth, weak calves
    • Sudden drop in milk with abnormal/blood-tinged milk ('milk drop syndrome')
    • Red urine (hemoglobinuria), jaundice in acute cases
    • Often subclinical in carriers
    Treatment
    Antibiotics (oxytetracycline, streptomycin/dihydrostreptomycin, or amoxicillin) and supportive care. Treat carriers to reduce shedding. Zoonotic.
    Prevention & control
    Vaccination (multivalent, serovar-matched), rodent and wildlife control, drain wet/muddy areas, and clean water sources.
    Listeriosis (Circling Disease)

    Causative agent: Listeria monocytogenes — Gram-positive rod that survives and multiplies in cold conditions, including poorly fermented (spoiled) silage.
    Transmission
    Ingestion of contaminated feed, especially spoiled silage with soil. The bacterium reaches the brain via nerves.
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Depression, off feed
    • Circling to one side, head tilt
    • Facial paralysis, drooping ear/eyelid/lip on one side
    • Drooling, difficulty swallowing
    • Also causes abortion and eye infection (silage eye)
    Treatment
    High-dose antibiotics early (penicillin or oxytetracycline) plus supportive care and fluids; advanced brain cases have a poor outlook.
    Prevention & control
    Feed good-quality silage (correct pH, no soil contamination), discard spoiled/moldy silage, and keep feed clean. Zoonotic.
    Tetanus (Lockjaw)
    Clostridium tetani

    Causative agent: Clostridium tetani — Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming rod. Spores in soil enter wounds and produce a powerful neurotoxin (tetanospasmin).
    Transmission
    Not contagious. Spores enter through deep or dirty wounds, castration, dehorning, or navel infection.
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Muscle stiffness, especially of the jaw ('lockjaw')
    • Stiff, stilted gait; raised tail
    • Third eyelid protruding across the eye
    • Bloat, difficulty eating
    • Muscle spasms triggered by noise/touch; often fatal
    Treatment
    Tetanus antitoxin, high-dose penicillin, wound cleaning/debridement, muscle relaxants/sedation, and quiet dark housing with fluids and nutrition. Guarded prognosis.
    Prevention & control
    Tetanus toxoid vaccination (often in clostridial combos), hygienic surgery/castration/dehorning, and prompt wound care.
    Botulism
    Clostridium botulinum
    Bacterial
    Causative agent: Clostridium botulinum — Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming rod that produces botulinum toxin, one of the most potent natural toxins. It blocks nerve signals to muscles.
    Transmission
    Ingestion of pre-formed toxin in decaying carcasses, spoiled feed/silage, or bones (phosphorus-deficient cattle chewing carcasses).
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Progressive muscle weakness / flaccid paralysis
    • Weak tongue and difficulty swallowing, drooling
    • Drooping eyelids, weak tail
    • Recumbency (going down), unable to rise
    • Death from respiratory paralysis
    Treatment

    Causative agent: Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides (small colony type) — a wall-less bacterium (mycoplasma). Causes severe lung and pleural disease.
    Transmission
    Inhalation of respiratory droplets during close, prolonged contact; carrier animals maintain the disease in a herd.
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Fever, dullness, off feed
    • Cough, painful and rapid breathing
    • Standing with head/neck extended, elbows out
    • Grunting; reluctance to move
    • Chronic 'lungers' with hidden lung lesions; can be fatal
    Treatment
    Antibiotics (e.g. tylosin, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones) may reduce signs but create carriers, so treatment is discouraged/banned in eradication zones. Policy is often test-and-slaughter.
    Prevention & control
    Vaccination (attenuated T1/44 strain) in endemic areas, movement control, quarantine, and stamping-out where eradication is the goal.
    Enterotoxemia (Overeating Disease)

    Causative agent: Clostridium perfringens — Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming rod normally present in the gut. Overgrows after sudden rich feeding and releases toxins.
    Transmission
    Not contagious. Triggered by diet change, grain overload, or rich milk/pasture that lets the organism multiply and produce toxin in the gut.
    Symptoms / Clinical signs
    • Sudden death, often in the best-doing calves
    • Depression, off feed, colic
    • Bloody or dark diarrhea
    • Staggering, convulsions, nervous signs

    Often too rapid to treat; may attempt antitoxin, oral antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and fluids. Correct the diet immediately.
